This is the third week is the Simple Discipleship series. Here are the first two messages in this series.
Here is the topic of study for next week:
- Prayer and Fasting
- The Scriptures for study are: Daniel 10:1-14, Isaiah 58, Matthew 6:5-21, Habakkuk 2:1-4, Mark 9:14-29, and 1 Timothy 2:1-4.
Worship and Sacrifice
- My notes can be found here: Simple Discipleship Week 3
- Here is the Audio Teaching from Feb 17, 2016: http://lwcburleson.sermon.net/main/main/20609931
As we begin learning about Worship and Sacrifice, we must first ask ourselves,
What is Worship?
What is Sacrifice?
If we do not have a proper understanding of these things, then as we discuss them, we will never come to a true understanding. My prayer is that as we investigate the scriptures, that we will understand even more the meaning of these and how we can apply them to our lives.
Worship – Honoring and lifting high another as higher than yourself out of a heart of love in response to God’s word, act, or nature.
Sacrifice – Giving up completely something that is greatly important to you for the benefit of another because you love them.
Here, I am talking specifically of the worshiping God, but we worship and lift high so many things that are undeserving. Food, sleep, money, fashion, entertainment, sports, people, can all be worshiped in spite of not being worth it. In this one statement, you may be feeling judged and your toes may feel stepped on, but this is the reality of the matter in my life as well as the lives of so many others.
We have a struggle in the morning when our alarms go off whether we will rise and spend time with the Lord worshiping Him or worship the god of sleep that is so seductive especially when it comes time to make the decision. I could go on and on about each one of these, but every time we choose these things over obedience to God and love for Him, we are worshiping them and lifting them high as the important things in our lives.
In 2 Chronicles 21, we come to learn that we worship God when we accept His word and are obedient without doubting or questioning what He says. Jehosophat had no direct command of God to put His worshipers on the front lines. They did it out of an act of obedience and thus worshiped God by being obedient and trusting in the word of God.
In Genesis 22, Abraham is called to sacrifice his son that God had just revealed was the son of promise. Abraham trusted God in such a way that as they went to the mountain in Vs. 5 Abraham says we go to worship. Abraham’s heart of sacrifice is a true act of worship to God. He was willing to give whatever God asked in obedience out of his great love for Him.
In John 4,
What Jesus mean to worship God in Spirit and truth?
- God wants a constant communion with you in the day to day. He does not want you to worship Him in a church or at your house only, but in the Spirit everywhere you go in every situation that you are in.
- God wants you to be honest with Him. You cannot fool God. He sees the thoughts and intentions of your heart. If you are giving Him something small and seemingly mediocre out of a good heart, it is greater worship than giving the very most you have out of a wrong heart. (1 Cor 13:3)
In Malachi 1, God desires our very best. If we bring God half-hearted worship out of duty, these things are not pure and holy and actually dishonor and disrespect God. He would rather no one worship than to have duty-filled worship out of grudging hearts. He wants pure and holy worship that is a true witness to who He is. This only comes when we are giving God our best out of a willing and loving heart.
In 2 Samuel 24, David reveals that God is blessed by our sacrifice more than he is blessed by our excess. We see this concept over and over throughout the Bible that when we give God something valuable to us, that is true worship. Those giving because they have extra does not impress God. Jesus states this in a different way when talking of the widow in Mark 12:41-44. God desires our pure and holy sacrifice so He can bless us with better than our very best!!!
Finally, in Luke 7, a “sinner” probably a prostitute comes in to the middle of the pastors and elders of their day. She humbles herself completely to the judgmental and critical thoughts and stares and worships Jesus. This “sinner” sacrificed more and gave more in worship than anyone else around. Because of her sacrifice and true heart of worship, her sins are forgiven, and she is saved. She was forgiven much and so loved much. The fact that she loved much caused her to sacrifice her most valuable possession and her pride as an act of worship to Jesus.
Does you love cause you to sacrifice your pride and valuables in worship to the Lord?
Nothing I have spoken is out of judgment or condemnation, but Holy Spirit has even convicted me in studying these things. Our love for God will always lead us to a true worship which is displayed in what we are willing to sacrifice for our True Love.
Ask Holy Spirit these questions and be obedient in what He is speaking:
Are you giving your very best to God? This is true worship.
What is God calling you to sacrifice to love Him and worship Him in a deeper way?
May you be blessed with knowing more of the Love of God than ever before, and may you receive the fullness of the blessing that comes through true worship and sacrifice.

In the last post, Simple Discipleship, I tried to bring you up to speed on where we are at the moment. I also encouraged you to study several key verses and see what God was saying through them.
In the post, I have included the main points of my notes and the link for the live teaching I did at Living Water Church. I would like to invite you to comment with your observations and what God was saying to you while studying this teaching.
Before we get started with the discussion, here is the topic for next week:
Intimacy/Love of God
Scriptures for Study: John 15:1-17, 1 Cor 13:1-13, Eph 3:16-21, Deut 7:6-9
This is the first discussion in the Simple Discipleship Series.
Here is the Link: Being a Leader/Disciple
Here are my Notes: Simple Discipleship Week 1
Since I have included my full notes, I will try to make this more of a coherent summary.
As we study what a disciple and leader are from scripture, we need to understand the definition of each.
What is a Disciple? .
Are you a Disciple?
What is a Leader?
Who are you leading? What are you leading them to?
A leader is to be more of a father that walks with you through the day to day struggles of life than an instructor. Anyone can tell you what you should be doing, but a father will take you hand and work through the hard times with you to make sure you come out the other side.
1 Corinthians 4:15-16 For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. Therefore I urge you, imitate me.
1 Thessalonians 2:11-12 as you know how we exhorted, and comforted, and charged every one of you, as a father does his own children, that you would walk worthy of God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.
It is the job of a father and leader to encourage, comfort, and challenge the people following them to walk more in line with God.
Every single one of us is created to be a good disciple and a good leader. How are you doing? You will be discipled by something and you will lead others into something. What are you being discipled by? Where are you leading others?
From the scriptures we studied, we can see a few characteristics of good disciples and leaders.
We must be do everything out of love!!! Jesus even loved Judas who he knew would betray him.
We must have Humility!!! Jesus took the lowest job and did it well even when no one else wanted to do it.
We must Serve others!!! We do not get to choose who we serve or how we serve them. We must humble ourselves and honor all those we are leading.
We must be the Example and Pioneer!!! Do as I do. Lead others by doing it first not just talking about it. God blesses us when we act, not just when we know or say the right things.
A Good Leader is a Good Follower!!! We must follow Jesus first and foremost and have a close personal relationship with Him. We must look like Him, smell like Him, walk like Him, and talk like Him so that we can lead others in the right way. And so they never go astray.
We must give God the Glory!!! Everything we do is through His power and authority so he gets the glory and honor that He rightfully deserves. We may get some honor and blessing for being obedient, but God gets the ultimate glory and honor for making it happen.
We are Influencers of Heaven!!! Our actions influence heaven when we are walking in line with Jesus. Heaven has influenced us and transformed us into sons and daughters. Because of this, we have the influence of heaven on this world.
We must be Selfless!!! We deny ourselves legitimate (and illegitimate) pleasures of this world so that we can be truly free and filled with the Presence of God!!!
We must know True Value!!! First, we have to know the true value that God has for us, and then we have to know the value He places on the souls of all mankind.
1 Timothy 4:8 godliness is profitable for all things
We must be Faithful and Steadfast!!! The only time for us to test our allegiance is right now. Will you stand for Jesus when no on else does?
We must Know God!!! This is the key to being a disciple and leader. Seek to know God in a deeper way!!!
We must Be Strong!!! When we know God, He makes us strong
We must be Adventurers!! When we know God in a deep way, we have what we need to do great things, and He can trust us to be obedient in doing great things.
We must be Lead Others into Knowing God More!!! Part of us knowing God is us sharing that knowledge and relationship with others. Part of us growing in God us teaching others what we are learning.
We must Understand our Authority!!! God has given all authority to Jesus, and Jesus has given it to us. Jesus’ authority is ours if we will only walk in it.
We must Go!!! God calls His followers to action and doing. What are you doing for Him right now?
We must be Disciple Makers!!! We are called to make disciples of nations. This comes by us raising up others who can reproduce the discipleship we have instilled within them.
We must be Carriers of Christ!!! Jesus goes with us, and His power, His Presence, and His authority works in us and through us.
We must be Lovers of Jesus!!! We must love Him first and foremost in all things, and this love should eclipse all other loves
We must be Willing to Sacrifice!!! We must lay down our junk and take up what God has for us. We must lay down our very lives.
We must be Finishers!!! Being a disciple and being a leader are not easy things, but we do not start what we cannot finish.
We must be Spicy and Full of Flavor!!! People recognized Jesus because of what He said and did and people should recognize us because we are just like Him.
What are we worth if we no longer look like Jesus???
What is a Disciple? A disciple is someone who leaves everything behind and follows Jesus out of a heart of love.
What is a Leader? A good leader is a disciple, who is leading people to do the same thing that He is daily doing.
Our position in the Kingdom is not made up of what we have, it is determined by what we are willing to give up out of love and obedience to our Father.
What does this study mean if we do not make it personal??? I want you to meditate on these question:
Who am I leading?
Who is leading me?
Who can I disciple?
Who do I want to be discipled by?
Is it worth it to you to be a disciple and leader?
Ask Holy Spirit to bring revelation to you how you can follow Him more closely. Anything that you need to confess and leave behind, do it now and never look back!!!
Remember that we are all walking through this together. May the Lord Bless you and Keep you!!!
Jeremiah, Man on Fire!!!
I would like to apologize for taking so long to post, but it has been a crazy fast move of God since the last posting in September. God led us suddenly to Living Water Church. Within the last 5 months, God has honored us by placing us in a position as Assistant Pastors. In November, we began overseeing the youth, and the pastor here had to have a surgery that kept him out for a month and a half. God very quickly showed His favor in our lives, and we were given a huge responsibility of making sure things were running at the church until the Pastor returned. We have an amazing group of leaders surrounding us and helping us in our new role, and are thankful to them for being a blessing to us.
Along with that, we have had a growing Man of God to look after. He is ever a joy and brings life to us in all things, even when he is getting into mischief. We are training him up with a love for the nations, and he often asks to see the world. We take that time to pray for revival and an increase of Holy Spirit and Fire to overwhelm the nations.
Now that the Pastor is back to full strength, things have settled down a bit, and I hope to be posting more often to keep you updated. God recently opened the door for me to teach on Simple Discipleship.
He gave me a discipleship plan not too long after returning from our around the world trip. Finally, after a year and a half of waiting, I have been given the opportunity to teach this at the church. I would encourage you to study through this with us. I will be posting the weekly topic and verses to allow you to study them, and then about a week later, I will post the recording from my teaching at Living Water Church. If you are hungry and wish to grow, use this as a study to be discipled and than to disciple others to do the same.
My intention in this study is to study the major topics of important by studying the scriptures directly. I have tried to find between 3-5 short scripture references for us to learn together directly from the Word. I want to teach in such a simple way over each area so that you are able to not only learn it, but you have the ability to teach it the very next day. I have also tried to take scriptures out of the Old and New Testament to bring a totality of teaching on each subject. Again, I encourage you to be a part of us growing together through what God is speaking.
The First Week’s topic is Being a Leader/Disciple. The scriptures we will be focusing on are: John 13:1-17, John 14:12-14, Mark 8:34-38, Daniel 11:32-33, Matthew 28:18-20, Luke 14:25-35, Mark 10:28-31.
May the Lord bless you in all that you do and may much fruit abound in and around you, no matter where you may be in the world, because of your love and faithfulness to Him!!!
